Paris-Nice Stage 5: Olav Kooij Wins Again!

Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease A Bike) nabbed his second victory at Paris-Nice on stage 5, finishing a good bike length ahead of Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Pascal Ackermann (Israel-Premier Tech).

Kooij had this to say afterwards. “I feel faster and stronger than last year. Today was a tough ride, but I survived pretty well. If you don’t get through such a stage well, you won’t have a good sprint at the end. It’s a combination of both on days like today.”

For Pedersen, it was the second time he was beaten by Kooij in a sprint. In the post-race interview he expressed that he had done his best. “In a high-speed sprint like this he [Kooij ] is super, super fast. It’s not easy for me. Today he also came from the slipstream, with a lot of speed. I have no excuses: he’s just faster.”

In the overall general classification, Brandon McNulty (UAE) moved back into the leader’s jersey, 23″ ahead of Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) and 34″ ahead of Luke Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla).
