Vuelta a Burgos Feminas Stage 2: Wiebes Relegated, Vollering Wins.

Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx) crossed the line first in stage 2 of Vuelta a Burgos Feminas, however, it was her teammate Demi Vollering who was awarded the win after race officials relegated Wiebes to 3rd place.

A review of the sprint shows Wiebes abruptly changing her line in the final 100 meters and impeding the progress of Chloé Dygert (Canyon-SRAM) who is next to her. In the replays, Wiebes appears to lose control for a moment, make contact with Dygert, and then regain control.

At the finish, Vollering had this to say: “I am happy that I finished second, because otherwise the victory would have gone to another team. But Lorena is the absolute winner for me today, because she came by impressively on such a steep finish.”

Dygert acknowledged that the contact with Wiebes affected her, but wouldn’t go as far to say it cost her the victory. “The sprint is still a learning process for me. It’s always easy to look back and say I could have done this or that differently. When Wiebes made contact, my finger hit my shifter twice and bogged me down, so it was hard to get going again.”
