Tour de France Femmes Stage 2: Kool outsprints Wiebes for the win

Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich PostNL) won her second stage by outsprinting Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) in Rotterdam on Tuesday. Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) rounded out the podium in third.

Kool was still in disbelief afterwards that she won again. “Dreams come true pretty quickly these days. First yesterday. And then today to wear this jersey was very special. I think I’m stronger than ever. I never expected this two weeks ago, but things can change quickly. It was a rather chaotic sprint. We were a bit far, but we knew we had to stay calm. I tried to stay as calm as possible and just launched my sprint. That was enough to win.”

Wiebes said afterwards that she launched her sprint too early. “I think I started a bit too early. The team did really well. You get beaten sometimes, that’s just the way it is. Today we showed that we take the initiative, we put down a good lead out. I felt her coming at a certain point. Then you can’t do much more. I thought we were a bit closer, but that happens in a sprint. When you get out of the slipstream it’s more difficult than when you’re already in the lead.”

Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) noted afterwards that it was a hectic stage. “It was very stressful, very fast. I was very happy that the team wanted to invest energy all day long in riding at the front of the peloton all day long. That really helps. You also feel the respect of the other teams, that is nice to see. Everyone stays in their own train. It was a hectic final, luckily we got through it well. It would have been nice if Lorena could have won. Maybe she started a bit too early. I don’t know, but it is a shame.”
