Mischa Bredewold (SD Worx-Protime) won the stage 5 time trial eleven seconds ahead of Brodie Chapman (LIDL-Trek) and twenty-two seconds ahead of Christina Schweinberger (Fenix -Deceuninck).
Ruth Winder (Human Powered Health) place fourth, 24 seconds slower than Bredewold, and moved into the leader’s jersey. Bredewold moved up to second place in the overall GC, while Christina Schweinberger moved into 3rd place.
The yellow jersey, Margot Vanpachtenbeke (Volker Wessels) crossed the line in 46th place, more than four minutes slower than Bredewold, and dropped to 12th on the GC.
Mischa Bredewold (SD Worx-Protime) was happy to have taken her team’s first win after missing out in the previous stages. “I am very happy about this stage victory. I have worked with my coach and the team for many years to win a time trial at the pro level. This also takes some of the pressure off our team now that we have our first win. On Friday I was really annoyed about my third place in Mühlhausen because I made a really stupid mistake in the sprint.”
Ruth Winder (Human Powered Health) put in a great performance, only conceding 24 seconds to Bredewold, and hopes to keep the yellow jersey to the end. “I was hoping for a good time trial and started very quickly. At the end it was a battle against myself. Now I hope to be able to wear the yellow jersey at the end of the tour on Sunday too.”
Franziska Brauße (Ceratizit -WNT), the best German rider, explained the importance of the race for the Olympics. “For me, the tour is once again important for my form with a view to the Olympic Games. Being the best German is good for morale. The route was very technical, at times on not very good roads, everyone is solely responsible for the risk in the individual time trial. The stage on Sunday in Schmalkalden will be my last road race before Paris.”
