Americans took the top two places on the final day of Paris-Nice, with Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) winning the stage, and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) finishing second and winning the overall GC. Rounding out the podium in third was Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale).
The stage commenced with aggressive tactics, notably from Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), who launched multiple attacks in the opening kilometers. Despite his efforts, Pedersen was reeled back into the peloton each time.
As the race progressed, the peloton faced the demanding ascents of the Col de la Porte and Côte de Peille. These climbs significantly reduced the group size, with only about 30 riders remaining in the peloton by the base of the final ascent.
With Sheffield seized the opportunity on the Côte de Peille, initiating a solo attack that proved decisive. He maintained his lead over the subsequent climbs and descents, crossing the finish line on Nice’s Promenade des Anglais with a comfortable advantage.
Jorgenson, who had worn the yellow jersey since Stage 5, secured his overall victory by finishing second on the stage. His consistent performance throughout the race ensured his lead in the general classification.
Jorgenson’s victory marked his second consecutive Paris-Nice title, highlighting his exceptional form and strategic acumen. His team’s support throughout the race was pivotal in maintaining his lead.
“It’s my first win at WorldTour level,” Sheffield exclaimed afterwards. “To win here now means so much to me. It’s so hard to win in cycling, no matter what race. It really means so much. The team always believed in me, even in the tough times. The same goes for my family.”
Jorgenson was equally happy and relieved. “It’s a relief, more than anything. There’s a lot of stress from my shoulders right now. I’ve been thinking about this week for four months. So yes, it’s nice to finish it and know that I did everything I could. It has worked out well.”
