Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes: Grace Brown outsprints the favorites and wins

Grace Brown (FDJ-SUEZ) outsprinted Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) and Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) to take the victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes on Sunday.

Brown became part of a breakaway that formed after Elise Chabbey (Canyon-SRAM) launched an attack on the Côte de Stockeu. Chabbey successfully pulled away a small group, which remained together until the Côte de la Redoute, where it began to splinter.

Chabbey, along with Brown, then teamed up with Kim Cadzow (EF Education-Cannondale) at the front of the race. Meanwhile, Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek), Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime), and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) initiated an attack behind them on the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons, forming a chasing group.

With under 10km to go, the three leaders were caught by the three chasers and the new group of six worked together and easily stayed ahead of the peloton.

In the final kilometers, Niewiadoma and Chabbey alternated attacks, with Niewiadoma gaining a slight advantage in the finishing straight. However, Longo Borghini was able to bridge the gap and led out the sprint. Behind, it appeared that no one would be able to challenge her until Brown surged from behind, caught up to Longo Borghini, then sprinted again in the final meters to claim victory. Vollering started her sprint from behind too late and had to settle for third.
