La Vuelta Femenina Stage 3: Vos outsprints the peloton

Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) clinched victory in stage 3 of La Vuelta Femenina by outsprinting Charlotte Kool (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) and and Olivia Baril (Movistar Team). It was Vos’s 2252nd career victory.

Launching her sprint 150 meters from the finish line, Vos surged ahead, crossing the line several bike ahead of Kool and Olivia Baril in a stage that was marred by crashes in the last 3 kilometers.

“We were in the lead all day yesterday, but then had bad luck in the final. Today we went all-in again . The girls rode really well. It’s nice to end it then. I am very happy with this victory.” – Marianne Vos

The stage began with Mireia Benito of AG Insurance-Soudal initiating a solo breakaway right from the start and maintaining a lead for 120 kilometers before being reeled in 7.5 kilometers from the finish. Soon thereafter, a crash occurred and thinned the peloton to just 34 riders, with Movistar Team guiding the reduced group into the penultimate kilometer before Riejanne Markus (Visma-Lease a Bike) took charge with one kilometer to go.

A late attack by Amber Kraak (FDJ-SUEZ) failed to create a gap and became a lead out for the sprinters, with Liane Lippert (Movistar Team) being the first to sprint at the 300 meter mark with Baril and Vos in her slipstream.

In the final 200 meters, Kool found herself exposed to the wind too early, allowing Vos to easily come around in the final 150 meters and take the win by a couple bike lengths.

With her stage victory, Vos also secured the green points jersey.
