Charlotte Kool (Team DSM) won stage 2 of the Vuelta Femenina in a mass sprint by coming around Marianne Vos (Team Jumbo-Visma) at the line. Rounding out the podium in third was was Chloé Dygert (Canyon-SRAM) who launched her sprint at 500 metres.
“It was a really long sprint,” Kool said. “I was first a bit boxed in but then luckily I could come to the wheel. I am very happy. It’s my first win in a Grand Tour.”
While Marianne Vos missed out on the win, she was happy to take the GC leader’s jersey. “It was not my goal to take the leader’s jersey, I just had my eyes on the stage victory. Still, it’s always great to keep the jersey in the team.”
Dygert was probably the biggest surprise. Coming back to cycling after 14 months of rehab from injuries she was able to hold off the peloton for third. “I can also consider this as a victory. I knew attacking was my best option, I just went a tad early,” Dygert said afterwards.
Tomorrow’s stage 3 will be a flat route of 157,8 kilometres between Elche de la Sierra and La Roda.
