Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro cycling Team) took everyone by surprise by outsprinting Laurence Pithie (Groupama-FDJ) and Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla) in stage 2 of Paris-Nice.
Action in the peloton was subdued, with most riders content to roll along and allow KOM rivals Rutsch and Burgaudeau go head-to-head in contesting mountain sprints. In the end, Burgaudeau got the better of Rusch and now leads the KOM competition by 2 points (15 to 13).
In the final kilometers, the Tudor leadout train attempted to bring De Kleijn to the front, but couldn’t give him the position he needed. Luckily, De Kleijn was able to maneuver himself into the right position and launch his sprint.
“I was a little bit boxed in by my own teammate. I screamed to the left so he opened up and I could go to the wheel of Van Poppel and I came with speed and kept it to the line.”
It was De Kleijn’s first WorldTour victory.
