Omloop Nieuwsblad 2026: Opening Weekend of the Spring Classics

The Spring Classics season gets underway in earnest on Saturday, February 28, with Omloop Nieuwsblad once again setting the tone for what lies ahead. As ever, the opening Flemish one-day race is less about what’s been promised over winter and more about who can actually deliver when the roads turn narrow, rough and exposed.

Starting in Ghent and finishing in Ninove, Omloop remains a familiar but unforgiving test: short, sharp climbs, repeated cobbled sectors and the near-certainty of cold, wind or rain. It may not carry Monument status, but few races are scrutinised more closely. For riders and teams targeting the spring, Omloop is the first proper benchmark.

A race that reveals, not decides

Omloop rarely settles the pecking order for the entire Classics campaign, but it often hints at it. Early splits in crosswinds, aggressive racing far from the finish and tactical gambles are all hallmarks of a race where form is still fragile and cohesion not yet perfected.

The Flemish Ardennes climbs — traditionally including the Molenberg, Haaghoek and Berendries — provide repeated opportunities for teams to force selections. The finale into Ninove, often contested by a reduced group, rewards strength and positioning rather than pure speed.

Familiar rivals, fresh dynamics

Much of the pre-race focus will once again centre on the sport’s dominant cobbled specialists. Wout van Aert arrives as a perennial favourite, still seeking to convert consistent Omloop performances into victory. Mathieu van der Poel, should he start, brings his usual unpredictability — capable of winning solo or detonating the race long before the finish.

Behind the headline names, Omloop has a habit of elevating riders slightly outside the spotlight. Strong rouleurs, classics domestiques given freedom, and fast finishers who survive the climbs often find this race suits them perfectly. Recent editions have shown that tactical discipline can outweigh star power.

Teams under the microscope

For the Classics squads, Omloop is as much a test of organisation as individual form. Positioning before the cobbled sectors, controlling early breakaways and responding to accelerations on the hellingen will expose which teams are already functioning smoothly — and which are still searching for rhythm.

The race also offers an early chance for riders to stake leadership claims within their teams, particularly in squads arriving with multiple protected options.

More than just an opener

While bigger prizes lie ahead in March and April, Omloop Nieuwsblad remains a race riders desperately want on their palmarès. Winning here doesn’t guarantee a successful spring, but it delivers confidence, clarity and momentum.

As the peloton rolls out of Ghent and into the Flemish backroads, winter preparation gives way to reality. By the time they reach Ninove, the Classics season will no longer be theoretical — it will be underway.
